General Description
Location: On the NE coast of Bahrain, to the east of Mina Sulman port and the capital Manama. The port area is situated at the entrance to Mina Sulman and the Khor Qhaliya which is protected by the islands of Bahrain, Sitra and Muharraq, and the ASRY-GIIC Causeways.
General overview: The Sitra Marine Area encompasses the marine facilities provided by the following Companies: BAPCO, ASRY, ALBA, GPIC AND GIIC. See Khalifa Bin Salman Port as a separate port entry.
BAPCO - contains six berths for ocean going vessels and one berth where small vessels of up to 73m in length and 4.8m draught may be berthed.
Max size: Tankers: LOA 274 m., draft 12.85 m.
ALBA - contains a jetty with two berths, the outside berth being used for bulk carriers unloading coke and alumina ore and the inside berth being for vessels loading metal products.
Max size: Bulk: 60,000 d.w.t., LOA 225 m., draft 14.5 m.
ASRY - contains two jetties 122m apart, with a solid quay wall providing 6 berths in addition to the drydock, 375m in length by 75m width.
Max size: Tankers: 60,000 d.w.t., sailing draft 12.0 m.
GIIC - contains one jetty with off lying dolphin providing two berths, the Eastern berth is used for offloading iron ore, whilst the Western side is used for loading.
Max size: Bulk: 170,000 d.w.t., LOA 290 m., draft 12.8 m
Pilotage is compulsory for vessels 250 g.t. and over except for naval vessels. Available throughout 24 hours.
Traffic figures: Approx 750 vessels are handled annually.
Load line zone: Tropical.
Max size: Approx 110,000t. Max draught 12.8m.
Anchorage: Sitra Inner Anchorage lies on the northern side of the fairway between Sitra Light Buoy and Mina Sulman, offering protection from the prevailing NW winds.The normal anchorage for arriving vessels waiting orders or tide is 1 n.m. south of Buoy No. 27. Approximate position Lat. 26° 10' N, Long. 050° 47' E. Sitra Anchorage now restricted anchorage and may only be used by special permission of port authorities.
