General Description
Location: Sagunto is situated 10nm N of Valencia.
General overview: A sheltered, multipurpose port constructed mostly on reclaimed land. Sagunto handles vehicles, iron, steel, dry and liquid bulk, LNG, containers and breakbulk cargo. Sagunto is managed by Autoridad Portuaria de València. The port consists of three quays protected by a breakwater 1,105m in length running E-W, the Pantalan outer pier and the LNG berth on the new south harbour. The South Quay is used for import/export operations of steel reels basically for the iron and steel plant (SIDMED) as well as for unloading of ammonia anhydride by means of special facilities for the fertiliser factory, FESA-ENFERSA.
The North Quay is used for the shipping of fertilisers from the fertiliser factory as well as for general cargo operations (iron/steel and metal products). The Central Quay, The Integral Automated Terminal handles pallets of perishable goods at the Central Quay. Pantalan Pier, situated 2,000m from the coastline to the N of the port allows vessels of up to 75,000GT and 14.0m draught to operate. A new LNG berth, importing LNG from Egypt, has been constructed on the inner side of the new outer harbour, to the south of the existing port. There is also a fishing harbour.
The Port of Sagunto offers 220,000 m2 of yard area and 55,000 m2 of covered warehouses, as well as 4 ro - ro ramps, 6 ship to shore cranes, 8 mobile cranes and 7 reachstackers.
This port has an annual traffic capacity of 10% of the entire port – its main cargo is liquefied natural gas; three million tonnes of gas are shipped per year due to the regasification plant located nearby. Around 70% of the port's current traffic consists of iron and steel products and the rest of fertilizers, construction materials, timber and perishable products.
