General Description
Location: Eemshaven is a new port located on reclaimed land, at the mouth of the River Eems and near the main North Sea shipping routes.
General overview: The harbour area consists of a central channel, the Doekegatkanaal, and three basins, Julianahaven, Emmahaven and Wilhelminahaven. The port is a deep water tidal port and handles general cargo, bulk and also the loading and discharging of edible products, reefer cargoes and unitised traffic.
The access channel (dukegart canal) has a water depth of 12 meters. Ships with a draft of 12 meters can only enter the port at high tide. The draft may be increased to 13 meters in the planning.Ships can also anchor near the West Breakwater, which is 16 meters deep.The port has complete service facilities, including ship repair, fueling, dry dock, small motor boats, medical treatment, traction, fresh water, supplies, repatriation, and no pollution discharge.
The water area of the port area is divided into several basins.The Doekegatkanaal is 14 meters deep at the entrance and 12 meters deep in the distance. The bottom width of the breakwater is 300 meters, the water depth is 14 meters, the minimum width is 275 meters, and the water depth is 12 meters. At the end of the canal is a curved harbor basin with a diameter of 500 meters and a water depth of 12 meters.To the east of the basin is a basin for oil tankers, which is 600 meters long, 200 meters wide and 17 meters deep.In the west of the turning basin, there is a basin 1200 meters long, 250-300 meters wide and 14-17 meters deep.
A wharf is under construction in the south of the harbor basin, 600 meters long and 300 meters wide. Specialized in handling groceries and single goods.
The port is equipped with two 20 and 50 ton cranes and one roll on/roll off elevator.The port of EMA in the south is under construction. The length of the basin is 600 meters, the width is 130 meters, and the water depth has been dredged to 10 meters.
Traffic figures: Approx 230 vessels, 700,000t of cargo and 500,000 passengers handled annually.
Load line zone: North Atlantic Winter Seasonal Zone II, Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31.
