General Description
Location: Port Said is situated at the northern entrance to the Suez Canal, a bypass channel having been constructed between Km 17 and the Mediterranean Sea so that canal traffic can avoid the port except vessels entering the Canal through the Eastern channel.
General overview: The port is an artificial harbour, formed by breakwaters, with multipurpose facilities handling, dry bulk, general cargo, containers, Ro-Ro and passengers. Large storage yards and warehousing available.
Port Said East: The Suez Canal Container Terminal has been constructed at Port Said East Port and has been operational since October 2004. The terminal handled 700,000TEU during its first operational year and is predicted to reach 1,700,000TEU. El Arish, situated in the North Sinai, is managed by Port Said Port but can be found under separate entry.
Traffic figures: Approx 3,000 vessels visit the port, 10,700,000t of cargo, 1,000,000TEU and 271,450 passengers handled annually.
