General Description
Location: Tarragona is situated on the Costa Daurada approx 100km SW of Barcelona.
General overview: The harbour, which is protected by breakwaters, has total quayage length of over 9,430m and has facilities for handling most types of cargo. An offshore SBM berth is provided for large tankers discharging crude oil.
Passenger facilities at the Port of Tarragona include the Aragon and Lerida Docks and a surface area of 7.3 hectares. The Aragon Dock is 350 m long with alongside depth of 12.4 m, and the Lerida Dock is 170 m long with alongside depth of 12.4 m.
The entrance to the Port of Tarragona is 350 m wide and 22 m deep. The Port covers 4.2 thousand sq. m. The commercial docks in the Port of Tarragona are a total 8,500 m long with average alongside depth of 12.1 m (ranging from 3.8 to 20 m). The passenger docks are a total of 1,400 m long with alongside depth of from 2 to 6 m.
The Port Authority is responsible for 11,800 m of docks with alongside depths ranging from 3.8 m for the docks supporting service vessels to 20 m for one solid bulk dock. A total of 4,400 m of docks with alongside depth averaging 12.2 m serve general cargoes. A total of 660 m of docks with alongside depth averaging 12.4 m serve liquid bulk cargoes. A total of 210 m of docks with alongside depth averaging 12 m serve mixed cargoes. A total of 3,300 m of docks with alongside depth averaging 13 m serve solid bulk cargoes. A total of 1,700 m of docks with alongside depths ranging from 3.5 to 7 m serve recreational vessels.
The Port of Tarragona covers over 213 hectares and contains almost 184,000 sq. m. of closed storage. The Catalunya Wharf contains a 7,560 sq. m. multi-purpose warehouse for grain storage and other uses. The terminal is equipped with 1752 m of conveyor belt that can move 3,000 tons of solid mineral products per hour to the storage areas. The Aragon Wharf contains a multi-purpose warehouse with capacity for 35,000 tons of grains. It also contains a 45-thousand metric ton grain silo with four mechanical elevators that can move 400 t/ph.
The Reus Wharf contains silos with capacity for 30,700 metric tons of grains and two silos with capacity for four thousand metric tons of cement with a 304-square meter warehouse for storing cement on pallets. The Reus Wharf also contains a refrigerated warehouse with two 13,000 cbm chambers and a 1750 sq. m handling area for perishable products. It contains a second refrigerated warehouse with a 2700 cbmchamber and a 1200 sq. m air-conditioned handling area. A new 24-thousand cbm chamber joins the 2 warehouses and adds a 9500 cbm chamber. The Reus Wharf also contains fuel supplies for fishing vessels.
The Castilla Wharf at the Port of Tarragona contains a terminal for oils, fats, and fertilizers with 45 tanks and a total storage capacity for over 28 thousand cubic meters. The Castilla Wharf also contains 40-thousand metric ton grain silos with capacity for handling 1600 metric tons per hour. It also contains two 8400 square meter warehouses and a multi-purpose warehouse for grains with capacity for 20 thousand metric tons. Castilla Wharf West contains a multi-purpose warehouse for grains with capacity for 13 thousand metric tons. Its multi-purpose warehouse has capacity for 15 thousand metric tons of grains.
The Port of Tarragona’s Inflammables Zone contains a terminal for chemical products with 30 carbon and stainless steel tanks with total capacity for almost 26 thousand cubic meters. It also contains a chemical products terminal with 73 tanks and capacity for 175 thousand cubic meters and capacity for moving 300 metric tons per hour.
The Exterior Port in the Port of Tarragona boasts an 1150-meter jetty with three moorings for vessels of 6-, 20-, and 100-DWT. It offers three 16-20” diameter pipelines for transferring from one- to three-thousand tons of crude, naphtha, and ballast per hour. It also offers a 1489 meter jetty with five moorings for vessels from 11- to 100-DWT and two pipelines for moving crude petroleum. The Exterior Port includes a floating dock for mooring vessels to 250 thousand DWT that require 40 meters draught.
The Port of Tarragona’s Hydrocarbons Esplanade contains a storage part with capacity for 332.6 thousand cubic meters of gasoline and gas oil. The chemical products terminal has two 17.5-thousand cubic meter tanks for storing benzene.
Traffic figures: Approx 36,000,000t of cargo, 47,000TEU and 3,000 vessels are handled annually.
