General Description
Location: Thessaloniki, previously known as Salonica, is located on the NW shore of the Thermaicos Gulf.
General overview: The port is a Free Zone and serves the transit trade of Central and SE Europe. The port is operated by ThPA S.A. All quays are connected to the European Railway network. The main cargoes handled are grain, iron, tin, rice, tobacco, ores, minerals, fertilisers, timber, cement, chemicals, crude oil and refined products.
● Container Terminal
Containers are handled through a specially designed area located in the western part of Pier 6. The 550m long and 340m wide Container Terminal is part of the Free Zone, connected with the national rail network, and extends over a surface area of 254,000 m2. Small and medium-sized ships (feeder vessels) with a draught of up to 12 meters and maximum capacity of 550,000 TEU can be accomodated.
● Conventional Cargo Terminal
The Port of Thessaloniki is the first Conventional Cargo Transit Port of Greece and one of the main ports in the Eastern Mediterranean. It has fourteen quays suitable for all types of bulk and break bulk cargo, all of them connected to the national and international rail networks. The total length of quay walls is 4,200 meters.
● Cruise & Ferry
The Port of Thessaloniki has one of the largest passenger terminals in the Aegean Sea basin. The Passenger Terminal of the Port of Thessaloniki is fully compliant with the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code) and has facilities for the reception and service of passenger traffic (cruise and ferry). Thessaloniki, due to its proximity to places of great cultural interest and the very close distance of the port from the city center, has been an increasingly popular cruise destination in recent years. The Port of Thessaloniki has ferry connections with the islands of the Northeast Aegean, the Cyclades, the Sporades (Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos) and Izmir.
Traffic figures: Approx 3,000 vessels visit the port, 16,000,000t of cargo including 7,000,000t of dry cargo and 9,000,000t liquid fuel cargo, 370,000TEU, 220,000 passengers handled annually.
