General Description
Location: Palma de Mallorca is situated on the SW coast of Majorca, in the N of Bahia de Palma.
General overview: The island is the largest of the Balearic Archipelago with Palma being the most important city and port. The port is divided into four different areas: the commercial docks, the Muelle de Poniente, the marina docks and the Dique del Oeste (Porto Pi). The two quays that are used by cruise-liners are the Muelle de Poniente and the Dique del Oeste. A waterfront promenade connects the entire port from one end to the other. This promenade was created in the sixties when part of the port was reclaimed from the sea.
Currently, it is among the busiest homeports (departure ports) for cruise ships due to its proximity to the international Palma Airport (PMI) - located approx 8 km (5 mi) east of the cruise port. Port's cruise ship schedule shows a variety of roundtrip itineraries to seaports in the Mediterranean and also to Canary Islands (Spain).
Anchorage for large ships (passenger and cargo) is allowed only in 2 marine zones, located approx 300 m (1000 ft) off the coast and between Playa Can Pere Antoni (beach) and Cap Gros Lighthouse.
Since 2023, the Port allows maximum 3x cruise ships per day, including only one large-sized liner with passenger capacity 5000+. Prior to the restrictions were allowed 4x ships per day.
Traffic figures: Approx 4,800 vessels, 8,805,000t of cargo and 1,909,000 passengers (cruise & ferry) handled annually.
Load line zone: Summer.
Max size: Tankers: LOA 140m, draught 12.0m. Largest vessel handled: "QE2", LOA 294m, draught 9.94m. "Mostoles" LOA 243m, draught 14.32m, 75,395DWT.
