General Description
Location: Tuticorin lies on the SE coast of India in Tamil Nadu State on the W side of the Gulf of Mannar.
General overview: The Port of Tuticorin an artificial port, operated by the VO Chidambaranar Port Trust (VOC), is considered the 3rd largest container terminal in India.
It consists of 2 operational areas:
- Zone A consisting of the new port facilities
(Water area 388.8ha // Land area 870.75ha)
- Zone B representing the minor anchorage port.
(Water area 14.70ha // Land area 148.13ha)
An artificial harbour has been created by two breakwaters:
- North breakwater (Length 4,098m)
- South breakwater (Length 3,873m )
(Distance between breakwaters 1,275m.)
Cargoes:
- Exports: Salt, tea, ilmenite sand, garnet sand, cement, cotton piece goods, geomide stones, sugar, molasses, cotton yarn, coffee, etc.
- Imports: Coal, fertilizers, sugar, food grains, dun peas, iron scrap, pulp wood, POL, naphtha, furnace oil, raw cashew, LPG, etc.
