General Description
Location: The La Teja Refinery is the only petroleum refinery in Uruguay, and is located in the La Teja neighborhood in Montevideo. It has its own tanker berth.
General overview: Owned by the national industry ANCAP, the refinery has a basin for the discharge of tankers arriving with oil to their consignment and primarily produces light-grade oil products used for domestic industries. The refinery is connected to an oil terminal in the Port of Montevideo. It currently has a total capacity of approximately 50,000 barrels a day. As of the latest years, most of the approximately 5,680 m3/d (35,700 bbl/d) imported for the refinery were from Venezuela.
This basin is also known as the “Darsena de Inflamables”, and has the only berth for tankers on the N side with 8,50 m at datum, depending on basin and channel subject to periodical dredge, and for liquid gas carriers on the southern side, (6.70 m) FW, while on the W or land side there is a berth for coastal vessels, with a depth of about 3,65 m. Width of the basin here is 147 m, which is the same as the entrance, whilst the S berth is 248,75 m long. At the N berth the jetty protrudes 34 meters, and is 96 m long. Vessels berth bow in, and on sailing turn immediately outside the basin, on drafts of up to 6,70 m. Above this draft, the turning maneuver becomes difficult for vessel and tugs. At the S berth the oil lines are identical, except for luboils and alcohol, and there is also a 6´´ connection for loading or discharging LPG, at a rate of 200 cbm/h.
Load line zone: Summer.
Max. size: draft: 6.7 m; no LOA and beam restrictions.
Traffic figures: 990.700 tons of oil and by-products are handled annually.
