It is a vital transit hub for cargo to and from the CIS.
The port primarily handles timber, containers, agribulk, oil products, metals, fertilizers, and coal.
The main exports include coal, grain, foodstuffs, cotton, metals, ores, and timber. Imports include fish, fruit, sugar, foodstuffs, metals, machinery, and chemicals.
The port remains open all year round, but ice breaker assistance is required for about 1-4 months in winter. The prevailing winds can cause significant changes in the water level.
