Location: The port of Tyne is situated on the NE coast of England. General overview: The Port of Tyne Authority owns and operates quays and berths on the River Tyne. Tyne Dock is situated on the S side approx 2nm from the mouth. The port imports containers, Ro-Ro, steel, forest products, petroleum coke, fertiliser and aggregates. Exports include containers, Ro-Ro, vehicles, grain and scrap. Ferry and cruise ship passengers also handled. Traffic figures: Approx 3,540,000t of cargo, 20,000TEU, 671,000 passengers and 5,430 vessels handled annually. Load line zone: North Atlantic Winter Seasonal Zone II, Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31. Max size: Riverside Quay: LOA 300m. Tyne Dock: LOA 125m, beam 21.1m, draught 8.0m HWS. Largest vessel handled: "Esso Augusta", tanker in ballast, 140,000DWT. Largest cargo handled: "Sharda" with 55,000t of grain.
