General Description
Location: Trieste is situated on the NE coast of Italy in the Gulf of Trieste.
General overview: Most of the port is a free port area, which is divided into 5 zones: The Old Free Zone, New Free Zone and Timber Terminal are all devoted to commercial activities, while the Mineral Oils Free Zone and the Zaule Canal Free Zone are devoted to industrial activities. There is a total quayage of 12,128m, with 47 operational berths as follows: Twenty four berths for conventional and multipurpose vessels, 11 berths for full container vessels, Ro-Ro vessels and ferries, 5 bulk berths for industrial purposes, berths for oil tankers, 2 berths for passenger vessels and cruise liners.
Imports include, coal, mineral oils, chrome manganese ore, cotton, foodstuffs. Exports include timber products, paper, cement, machinery, iron and steel, vehicles, grain, sugar and fruit. The port area covers 2,304,000m² of which 1,765,000m² are the free zones.
The Port houses Fincantieri Trieste ATSM Shipyard. Near Trieste (in Monfalcone) is the Monfalcone Shipyard - one of Fincantieri-owned shipbuilding yards.
There are a number of berthing options in Trieste for yachts and pleasure craft, although most yachts usually head for the small Marina San Giusto or the adjacent basin of Bacino Sacchetta, both in the Porto Vecchio. A berthing option for smaller yachts (up to 12 metres) might be the small harbour of Barcola two miles N of the Harbour icon Porto Vecchio or the private pontoons in the industrial basin of Zaule, three miles SW on the southern fringes of the city. Finally, a larger yacht may find a berth in the commercial basin of Harbour icon Porto Franco Vecchio, half a mile N of Marina San Giusto.
Traffic figures: Approx 3,780 vessels visit the port, 44,400,100t of cargo, 394,000TEU and 113,700 passengers handled annually.
