General Description
Location: Piombino is situated at the N end of the Gulf of Follonica between two seas (Ligurian and Tyrrhenian) facing Elba Island, south of Livorno.
General overview: The port handles a variety of cargoes in both the new and old port areas including wet and dry goods and ferry passengers. Vessels drawing an excessive draught may lighten at the anchorage in depths over 25.0m. Piombino Port is used for both industry and for tourism. From the port of Piombino, in fact, it is possible to take ferries to Elba, Pianosa, Corsica and Sardinia.
Structurally, the port has a basin limited to the south-east by the breakwater quay, called Batteria, and to the north-east by the ex-ILVA jetty. The northern area of the port is prevalently used for port operations with the steelworking companies, which are carried out on the ex-ILVA jetty (south side 470 metres, north side 270 metres). The port operations relating to other dry bulk are carried out on different infrastructure: the Giuseppe Pecoraro wharf, with 275 metres of berthing, the Magona jetty, with two berths of 105 and 155 metres, and the Marinai d’Italia quay of 125 metres. Passenger traffic uses the Dente Nord Capitaneria (85 metres), the Elba jetty (75 metres) and piazzale Premuda, the Trieste quay (135 metres), along with the Batteria quay (285 metres), for ro – ro and passenger traffic with Sardinia.
