General Description
Location: The new port of Mailiao is at the mouth of the Hsin Hu Wei River approx 240km SW of Taipei.
General overview: The private industrial port is protected by two breakwaters which extend seaward from the shore N and S of the river mouth. Currently, there are 20 berths in operation with further berths in the future. The Mailiao port is situated in the Industrial region of the county of Yunlin. It is an artificial harbour that was formed after the coastal area was dredged.
The port spans 475 hectares and comprises 20 specialised wharves and 10 public berths, divided into three port areas. The North dock handles shipments of asphalt, LPG, Chemicals and Oil while the Eastern dock is a multipurpose facility dealing with industrial salt, coal, cement, caustic soda, chemicals and LPG. The western facility deals with only crude oil. Numerous warehouses and storage spaces are located near the main port area. Mailiao harbour also has a shipyard offering ship repair, maintenance and also a workshop.
Traffic figures: Approx 2,500 vessels visit the port and 45,900,000t of cargo, 59,000TEU handled annually.
