Location: The Port of Cochin (Kochi) is situated in SW India in the province of Kerala. General overview: The Port of Cochin is a deep water harbour S of Mumbai and has berths for general, coal and tanker cargoes, also specialized container transshipment berths. STS tanker operations in a designated anchorage area using Yokohama fenders is available. An offshore SBM capable of handling VLCC's has been recently commissioned. The Port is divided in the The Ernakulum and Mattancherry channels. Enrakulum Channel (Draft 12.5m) - 6 Berths (5 General Cargo and 1 Fertilizer) - 3 Oil Berths Mattancherry Channel (Draft 9.14m) - 4 Berths for General Cargo - 2 Jetties Cargoes: The port handles dry and liquid cargo, fertilizers, LNG, containers and alumina. Handling Equipment: - MHC (40t) - Reach Stacker (45t) - 6 Forklifts (3t & 5t) Storage: - 9 Sheds (34,581 m2) - 6 Warehouses (19,895 m2) Traffic figures: Approx. 1,180 vessels, 15,200,000t of cargo including 312,200TEU and 15,930 passengers handled annually. Load line zone: Tropical. The port continues its operation during monsoon season. IMO class 1: cargo can be handled / cleared only by NAD (Naval Armament Depot). They need min 15 days advance notice alongwith all the cargo documents. Also the advance manifest to be filled with Customs well in advance which is required for NAD to process their formalities/documentation for handling/clearance of cargo.
