General Description
Location: Trincomalee is situated on the NE coast of Sri Lanka.
General overview: Trincomalee, a government operated port, is a large natural harbour which consists of 2,023ha at low water. It is the only entirely sheltered harbour in the South Asian sub continent and increasing in commercial activity. Formerly a British naval base, was taken over by the Inaams Ceylonese government in 1956 to be developed as a commercial port.
Terminals: Trincomalee has several dedicated port terminals:
- Prima Jetty (inner): 122m Length // 5.9m Draft
- Prima Jetty (outer): 227m Length // 13m Draft
- Tokyo Cement Jetty: 155m Length // 8.6m Draft
- Oil Jetty (Lanka Indian Oil): 200m Length // 9.75m Draft
- Ashroff Quay: 250m Length // 13m Draft
The principal imports are wheat, cement, clinker and petroleum products. Principal exports are mineral sand, wheat bran pellets in bulk.

Whilst it has a limited number of berths, vessels of any size can still be accommodated in the anchorage. Cruise vessels are expected to increase in numbers with the recent removal of war risk insurance premiums.
