General Description
Location: Vanino is located on the far eastern coast of Russia, on Tartary Strait, directly across from Sakhalin Island.
General overview: Vanino, located in a natural deepwater bay, is considered to be one of the 10 largest ports in Russia and is the largest port in the Khabarovsk Region.
The bay is crescent shaped and is some 8km in length and is navigable all year round. It handles a wide variety of export and import cargoes including general and containers, metal and timber products, bulk oil and coal. The port has direct access to both the Baikal-Amur Railroad (BAM) and the Trans-Siberian Railroad. There are monthly ferries to Hokkaido. Ice can sometimes appear in late Jan to early Mar. The effect on navigation is minimal.
Traffic figures: The port handles approx 250 vessels, 14,000,000t of cargo, 10,000TEU and 60,000 passengers annually.

Load line zone: Summer Zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Seasonal Area for ships of 100m or less in length.
