General Description
Location: Sovetskaya Gavan, also known as Sovgavan, is situated on the Pacific coastline 8km S of Vanino and 70nm W of Sakhalin Island.
General overview: The port is home to the largest naval base in the Gulf of Tartary, a commercial port and the Pacific Terminal of the Trans-Siberian Railway. The port consists of five administrative divisions: Bukhta Kuryksha and Bukhta Okocha on S side of estuary, Bukhta Severnaya, Bukhta Vanina (see separate entry under Vanino) and Bukhta Zapadnaya on N side of the estuary.
Main cargo is timber in logs and sawn products, general/transhipment cargoes and Naval fleet services, including bunker replenishment.
Load line zone: Summer Zone for vessels over 100m LOA, Winter Seasonal Area for vessels 100m LOA or less. Winter, 1 Dec to 28/29 Feb. Summer, 1 Mar to 30 Nov.
