General Description
Location: Situated on the SE coast of Italy.
General overview: The port area lies within Molo San Nicola, an angled mole which extends approx 0.2nm WNW across the entrance of the bay from Punta San Nicola. The port of Otranto is a small cove well-sheltered by St. Nicholas's dock, equipped with three wings and several piers. The port can receive 390 boats up to 20 m. 10 berths are specifically reserved for transiting boats. Maximum length on the pontoons 20 metres. Depths at the pontoons range from 2.0 metres inshore to 6.5 metres at the outer end.
Otranto accomodates yachts, local fishing boats and freighters that haul cement products across the Adriatic. The port mainly exports olive oil and imports foodstuffs. Other cargoes handled include pumice, phosphates and fertilizers.
Traffic figures: Approx 250 vessels and 539,650t cargo handled annually.
