General Description
Location: The port of Barry lies on the N shore of the Severn estuary, approx 7nm W of Cardiff. General overview: There are 3 docks with a water area of 46ha and a min depth of 9.0m. The port has two entrances protected by Barry Island and two breakwaters. The main cargoes handled are liquid bulk, fruit, vegetables, grain, cement, coal, aggregates and containers. Barry is owned by Associated British Ports, under joint management with neighbouring Cardiff. Traffic figures: Approx 500,000t of cargo handled annually. Load line zone: North Atlantic Winter Seasonal Zone II, Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31. Max size: LOA 178m, draught 9.0m, Beam 23.8m, 23,000DWT. Largest vessel handled: "Atlantic Challenge", 27,343DWT.
