General Description
Location: Balikpapan is situated in the province of E Kalimantan on the island of Kalimantan (Borneo).
General overview: Balikpapan has a large oil refinery and is a major oil tanker port and also handles general, forest products, rattan and scrap iron. In addition, the port has a coal terminal at Tanjung Makasar, 4nm NNW with a deep approach channel.
There is a ferry terminal at Baruujung. Traffic figures: Approx 34,500,000t, 93,000TEU and 6,000 vessels are handled annually.
Load line zone: Tropical. Max size: Oil berths: LOA 190m, draught 12.0m, 35,000DWT, larger vessels of LOA 240m and 42,000DWT can be berthed with prior permission.
Coal Terminal: LOA 250m, beam 43m, approx draught 13.0m, 80,000DWT. Offshore STS: Size unlimited, water depth 39m.
