General Description
Location: Tulcea is situated on the S bank of the Danube at 37nm to 40nm marker from Sulina.
General overview: The Port of Tulcea is one of the largest Romanian river ports. Located in the city of Tulcea on the Danube river, the port is an important source of revenue for the city because many large international companies have established there. The shipbuilding industry is a key activity of the port and Norwegian company STX Europe (formerly Aker Yards) is the most important enterprise established there. The port serves the entire Danube delta with commercal and passenger traffic. Icebreakers are used to keep the port and Sulina Channel open in winter.
Main exports: Ferroalloys, aluminium hydroxide and scrap iron.
Main imports: Chemicals in bags, limestone, quartzite, bauxite, chrome ore, iron and coke in bulk.
Main transit: Dry and wet cargo in bulk, general cargo.
Traffic figures: Approx 1,500,000t of bulk cargo and 500,000t of other cargo are handled annually.
Load line zone: Summer Zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Seasonal Area for ships of 100m or less in length, Winter Dec 1 to Feb 28/29, Summer Mar 1 to Nov 30.
