General Description
Location: Galatz (Galati), the main Romanian river - maritime port, is situated on the left bank of the Danube, approx 150 upstream.
General overview: The port has 4 areas as follows: 1. Mineral Port 2. Old Commercial Port 3. Docuri Basin 4. Bazinul Nou Port.
Depths in the river channel range from 8.5 to 20m.
The port is kept open during the winter by ice breakers.
The principal exports are metal products, timber, cement, chemicals and industrial equipment, the main imports being iron ore, coal, coke and grain.
Traffic figures: Approx 9,500,000t of cargo and 4,500 seagoing and river vessels handled annually. This cargo figure is made up of approx 8,300,000t at Mineralier Galati, 433,000t at Docuri Galati and 815,000t at Bazinul Nou.
Load line zone: Summer Zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Seasonal Area for ships of 100m or less in length, Winter Dec 1 to Feb 28/29, Summer Mar 1 to Nov 30. Max size: LOA 200m, draught 7.3m, 25,000DWT.
