General Description

Location: The Port of Muroran is sitiuated on the eastern side of Volcano Bay, nestled along the Etomo Peninsula on the east coast of Hokkaido Island in Japan. General overview: The Port of Muroran is located in Hokkaido and is considered the main industrial port. It is also designated for quarantine and entry purposes and has the capacity to handle vessels up to 280,000 tons. The port is situated in a natural harbor and boasts depths of 16.5 meters. It is divided into three areas: the inner harbor areas 1 and 2, and the outer harbor area 3, which are separated by the Hakucho Bay Bridge. The port area is spread out from east to west and is divided into internal and external ports, each with north-south breakwaters. There is a port pool at the east end of the inner port, which is the wharf of Japan Steel Company. The north bank is used for ore and has 2 berths with capacities of 100,000 to 150,000 tons and depths of 14 to 16.5 meters. The south bank has A and B wharves, with a depth of 9 meters, and a total wharf line length of 1142 meters, which is more than double the length of the north bank. The eastern portion of the south bank of the inner port is deep and includes the Dayong Wharf, Japan Steel Wharf, and the Central Wharf. There are five breakwaters located in the west section of the south bank, with two berths of 10,000 tons in the No. 2 breakwater and the others used exclusively by shipyards. The middle section of the north bank of the inner port and the outer port is the wharf of the Japanese oil company, with a water depth of 11 meters and a 50,000DWT berth. The foreign port is a trestle berth with a depth of 16.5 meters and a capacity of 100,000 tons. The east section of the north bank includes the northeast electric power company wharf and the west section has the Haijiao wharf, with 7 deep-water berths. Additionally, there are two 50,000-ton deep-water berths located on the south bank of the port.
