General Description
Location: The port of Murmansk is situated in the S part of Kola Bay, 25nm from the entrance between Pinagoriy Point in the North and the mouth of the Tuloma River in the South, for a distance of 7.5nm except for the area of Murmansk fishing port.
General overview: The port of Murmansk has become a private port controlled by SDS Ugol and SUEK. It is open for navigation all year round. In very severe winters, the S and part of the middle of the elbow-shaped bends of the gulf, freeze over for a short period during calm and frosty weather. In mild winter, drift ice is observed in the S part. The port consists of a fishing harbour and a commercial harbour.
The commercial harbour is divided into 3 areas: Rudny (ore), the Central and the passenger terminals. The main cargoes are general cargo, alumina, iron ore pellets, steam coal, mineral fertilisers, steel, crude oil and oil products.
Traffic figures: Approx 6,300 vessels, 35,000,000t of cargo, 25,000TEU and 14,000 passengers handled annually.
Load line zone: North Atlantic Winter Seasonal Zone II, Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31. Max size: LOA up to 300m, max draught 13.0-14.9m.
