General Description
Location: The port of Yangpu is located on the W coast of Yangpu Bay, NW of Hainan Island. It is situated between Haikou port and Basuo port, facing the W entrance to Qiongzhou channel. The N and W shores of the harbour are rocky, while the E and S shores are mainly beaches.
General overview: Yangpu is a substantial natural commercial port with deep waters, very little silting and well sheltered from winds. The main imports are steel products, nickel and iron ores, coal, general cargo, machinery, palm oil and containers. Exports include bagged sugar and chips in bulk.
There is currently considerable port development, with land reclamation for new berths. Singapore Jurong Port has signed a joint venture accord with SDIC Jurong Yangpu Port Co, under the deal Jurong would manage and operate Yangpu port (2012).
Traffic figures: Approx 4,279,000t of cargo and 114,000TEU handled annually. Load line zone: China Sea Seasonal Tropical Area, Tropical Jan 21 to Apr 30, Summer May 1 to Jan 20.
