General Description
Location: Darwin is the principal port of the Northern Territory, situated on the S coast of Beagle Gulf, in the Timor Sea. General overview: The port provides easy access to the capital city of the Northern Territory and other Australian states. Cargoes handled include zinc and lead concentrate, LNG, containers, livestock and fodder. Traffic figures: Approx 1,625 vessels, 3,774,638t of cargo and 9,000TEU handled annually. Load line zone: South Indian Ocean Seasonal Tropical Area, Tropical May 1 to Nov 30, Summer Dec 1 to Apr 30. Max size: East Arm: LOA and beam unlimited, departure draught 12.0m plus tide less 1.5m UKC, 75,000DWT. LNG Berth: LOA 300m, beam 50m, draught 11.5m, 105,000DWT, 145,000m³. Largest vessel handled: "Legend of the Seas", cruise ship. The largest cargo vessel "Saiko Maru", draught 12.8m, 81,000DWT. Vessels drawing a draught of 11m can enter the Port in all tidal conditions. Draughts over 11.0m may be accepted with prior consultation and may need to wait for appropriate tidal conditions before entering the harbour.
