General Description
Location: The port of Argentia is located on the E side of Placentia Bay. General overview: Argentia Harbour is entered between Low Room Point and Broad Cove Point and extends 1.6nm in length, SW to the head of Sandy Cove. Argentia is a port of entry for Customs purposes and the harbour has been used as a supply base for offshore drilling platforms. During severe winters, the SW part of Argentia Harbour, SW of Cairn Head, freezes over from early Feb-Apr. Northern ice arrives around March for approx three weeks. The navigation season is year round. Major cargoes handled at the port include containers, salt, scrap metals, fish, petroleum, chemicals, explosives and cement. Load line zone: North Atlantic Winter Seasonal Zone II, Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31. Max size: Largest vessel handled: LOA 198m, 34,856DWT.
