General Description
Location: The Port of Dar es Salaam is situated on the east coast of Tanzania, bordering on the west side of the Indian Ocean and northeast of Zanzibar Island.
General overview: The Port of Dar es Salaam serves as the primary port for Tanzania and neighboring countries including Burundi, Congo (Democratic Republic), Malawi, Zambia, Uganda, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe.
It is a vital gateway for freight transportation, facilitating the import and export of goods to both the local market and various landlocked nations in East and Central Africa.
The port is characterized by its natural harbor, providing excellent shelter for vessels. It is a compact rectangular compound with the river/port on the eastern side and rail terminals situated at the northern and southern ends.
The port features a total length of 2,080 meters, accommodating 11 deep-water berths for handling containers, grain, petroleum products, general cargo, and passengers.
The Entrance channel has depth of 15.5 m with an average channel width of 200 m. Turning basin has a dia of 520 m with a depth of 15.5 m. Harbour basin and berths 1-7 have 14.5 m depth, berths 8-11 and Ro-Ro berth have 12.5 m depth.
Vessels with max LOA 294 m, beam 32 m and draft 13.5 m are handled without tide restrictions.
Vessels with max LOA 305 m, beam 40 m and draft 14.5 m are handled under restricted tidal conditions at berths 1-7
Prominent companies operating at the Port of Dar es Salaam include TICTS, which manages four container berths (8, 9, 10, and 11), and AZAM MARINE, which operates passenger ships between Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.
The port handles a diverse range of imports, including vehicles, cement, fertilizer, cotton goods, iron and steel goods, foodstuffs, machinery, and oil. Key exports from the port include sisal, tea, cotton, oilseeds, oil cake, timber, cashew nuts, tobacco, copper, and coffee.
