General Description
Location: The Port of Zanzibar, also known as Port of Malindi, is situated on the western side of the island of Zanzibar, approximately 60 kilometers north of Dar Es Salaam.
General overview: The Port of Zanzibar offers a well-protected harbor sheltered by a barrier of reefs. It features two berths: one dedicated to large cargo vessels (located at the left back) and another designated for ferries (situated at the right front).
The port area is also shared by private fishing boats.
The conventional berth handles both break bulk and container activities, while larger vessels are loaded and unloaded using lighters.
There are convenient ferry connections, including fast ferries and overnight services, to and from Dar es Salaam.
The port serves as an important hub for trade.
Major imports include building materials, hardware, spirits, tobacco, soap, and foodstuff.
Exports primarily consist of cloves and clove oil, gum, coconut oil, copra, hides, coir fiber, mangrove bark, seaweed, and seashells.
