General Description
Location: The port is situated at the SW extremity of the Golfe de Gabes, approx 70nm SE of the port of Gabes and 15nm S of Djerba.
General overview: Zarzis is the last coastal Tunisian town before the Libyan border. The port is an artificial harbour principally for exporting oil. The port consists of 2 harbours. The Inner Harbour, which is used by fishing craft and the Main Harbour with an area of 35ha and 12.0m depth. There is a manoeuvring basin of 450m diameter. The port is protected by a breakwater of 1,505m in length giving the port security against a NE swell.
The quays in the port have different structures:
- West quay posts 5, 6 and 7 with a total length of 600 m with a depth of - 10.50 m Hydro.
- North platform posts 3 and 4 with a total length of 340 m with a depth of - 10.50 m Hydro.
- South quay substations 8, 9 and 10 with a total length of 785 m with a depth of - 11.5 m Hydro.
- Service dock of length 139 ml with a depth of -5.00m.
- The Zarzis commercial port offers a quay line with a total length of 1,725 m.
Traffic figures: Approx 790,000t of cargo and 900 vessels handled annually.
