General Description
Location: The port of Viana do Castelo is situated on the mouth of the River Lima and its port installations are found on both river banks. It is about 31 miles from the port of Leixões and 44 miles from the port of Vigo.
General overview: The port is medium sized, serving the fishing industry and with good facilities for general cargo and containers in the commercial sector. It has an important shipbuilding and ship repair industry. There is a terminal for Ro-Ro traffic. The main exports are paper, timber and granite. Main imports are African wood, steel sheet, fish, machinery and bulk cement.
It is made up of 2 quay stretches, with a total length of 487 meters, on the south bank, and a pier 300 meters long located on the north bank. Focused on the movement of various types of cargo, the current traffic structure is predominantly composed of fractional general cargo and solid and liquid bulk.
In the port jurisdiction, an industrial unit is installed to carry out the shipbuilding and repair activity, with a total area of 245,000 m2, equipped with 2 dry docks, 2 construction platforms and a drainage basin. The shipyards are operated by the company West Sea - Estaleiros Navais, Lda.
