General Description
Location: The port of Rio Haina is situated to the W of the centre of the city of Santo Domingo on the Haina River (Rio Haina), within the modern city limits. General overview: There are port facilities on both banks of the river, the harbour is protected by a breakwater. The port of Rio Haina has become the busiest of three ports and is the leading sugar exporting port in the Dominican Republic. There are a total of 16 berths, 10 on the E side and 6 on the W side. The port handles mostly bulk, containers and trailers and homogeneous break bulk, such as steel products not requiring covered storage and bagged cargoes that are trucked directly from the discharging vessel. The port has a CBM berth for discharging LPG and clean petroleum products. Traffic figures: Approx 2,000 vessels and 10,000,000t of cargo and 300,000TEU handled annually.
