General Description
Location: San Juan is situated on the N coast of Puerto Rico, approx 30nm W of Cape San Juan, at the NE end of the island and about 60nm E of Point Borinquen, at the NW end. General overview: San Juan is the leading commercial port of Puerto Rico. San Juan Bay is approx 3nm and varies in width from 0.6nm to 1.3nm. It is the only harbour on the N coast of Puerto Rico which offers protection in all weather conditions. The port has a total of 43 berths, mostly owned and operated by the Puerto Rico Ports Authority. Traffic figures: Approx 9,600,000t of cargo and 4,721 cargo vessels handled annually. Passenger Traffic: 680 passenger vessels and 1,350,000 passengers. Container figures: Approx 1,830,000TEU handled annually. Load line zone: North Atlantic Seasonal Tropical Area, Tropical Nov 1 to Jul 15, Summer Jul 16 to Oct 31. Max size: General: LOA 228m, draught 10.6m. Tankers: LOA 259m, beam 42.7m, draught 10.3m, 90,000DWT. Largest vessel handled: "Queen Elizabeth II", 66,450GT, 9.9m draught.
