General Description
Location: Rafina is situated at the NW corner of Ormos Rafinas, a small sandy bay open to the NE, approx 25nm due E of Piraeus.
General overview: Rafina is a busy ferry port, relieving Piraeus from some of the traffic, with an artificial harbour which affords good shelter from N'ly winds. The port itself is quite compact and, unlike Piraeus, it only takes a few minutes to navigate around the port area. There are several types of boats departing from Rafina port, ranging from small, fast ferries to bigger ferries that also take vehicles. The inner harbour is quayed on all sides. A pier projects 20m from the W side of the inner harbour (0.075nm SW of the head of the inner mole).
The passenger port of Rafina has one large terminal, which has 13 ramps for conventional ferries and 2 ramps for high-speed vessels. There are ferries from the Rafina port to Mykonos, Santorini, Paros, Naxos, Tinos, Andros, and other islands of the Aegean Sea.
Traffic figures: Approx 2,000,000 ferry passengers handled annually.
Load line zone: Summer.
Max. size: Largest vessel called at the port: LOA: 137 m; draught: 5.5 m; deadweight: 3227 t.
