General Description
Location: Portland is located on the E side of Cape Discovery, Victoria State. General overview: The port of Portland is a sheltered, all weather port situated on the SW coast of Victoria (38°21'S 141°36'E). The Harbour is formed by two breakwaters enclosing 101ha. The main breakwater extends 1,280m in a N'ly direction from Battery Point, its N extremity is in 14.5m of water. The Lee Breakwater extends in an E'ly direction for a distance of 1,179m, with its extremity in 12.2m of water. The port entrance is 244m wide. The swinging basin is bounded by Berth No 6 and the two breakwaters. Much of the traffic is coastal with most of the remainder being mainly bulk cargo for export. Exports: Grain, woodchips, logs, aluminium ingots, livestock and timber products. Imports: Alumina, petroleum coke, fertilisers, sulphuric acid and liquid pitch. Traffic figures: Approx 200 vessels and 3,036,000t of cargo handled annually. Load line zone: Summer. Max size: LOA 255m, draught 12.2m to 12.7m, allowing for height of tide. Largest vessel handled: Mv "Irene V", LOA 263m, draught 12.6m, 81,796DWT.
