General Description
Location: The Mahakam River flows into the Macassar Strait on the E coast of Kalimantan. General overview: The Mahakam (Koetei) River may be considered the most important part of the E coast of Kalimantan. This is partly due to the fact that the town of Samarinda (see separate entry), 10nm above the delta, is the centre of the Anganna Muara and Semberah oil fields and of coal fields. From the point where the Mahakam River reaches the general line of the coast running S and N, its waters divide into 4 main channels. These sub divide into many smaller passages, forming a widespread, fan shaped delta, extending 20nm E and 40nm N from Tanjung Tambangongot. Beyond the coast of the delta there is a fringing bank from 3-7nm wide. Coal is transported down the Mahakam River by barge to the transhipment anchorages in the Mahakam Delta. Loading is carried out by ship's gear from barges. Traffic figures: The Bukit Baiduri Enterprise mine produces approx 2,500,000t, Fajar Bumi Sakti mine produces approx 1,000,000t, Multi Harapan Utama mine produces approx 3,000,000t, Tanito Harum mine produces approx 1,500,000t and Kitadin mine approx 780,000t annually. Load line zone: Tropical.
