General Description
Location: Sydney is situated at the head of the S Arm of Sydney Harbour, located on the NE coast of Cape Breton.
General overview: Sydney is a steel manufacturing centre and an export point for extensive coal fields, also specialises in bulk and project cargoes. There are a number of wharves in the port belonging to the Sydney Steel Corporation and Cape Breton Development Corporation, located at the S arm of the harbour in international docks, there are other facilities located in the city. Further into the harbour from the international docks, owned by Transport Canada, is the drydock facility, which has patented slipways capable of handling vessels up to 3,000t.
Traffic figures: Approx 190 vessels visit the port and 7,500,000t of cargo, (including Sydney/North Sydney) handled annually. Load line zone: North Atlantic Winter Seasonal Zone II, Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31.
