General Description
Location: Puerto Limon is situated on the NE Atlantic coast of Costa Rica, due E of the capital San Jose. Puerto Limon is situated close S of a bold headland and Puerto Moin is situated 6km to the NW.
General overview: Puerto Limon is the principal port of Costa Rica with a Free Trade Zone and is well served by local facilities including minor repairs, bunkering, fresh water and provisions. Cruise ships, containerised, bulk and general cargoes can be handled through the ports. The port has Ro-Ro facilities but still relies heavily on slings and pallets for cargo load/discharge. Puerto Moin, which is due to become the main commercial area with a new container terminal under construction, has a refinery with a tanker facility. Also Ro-Ro and general quay handling bananas and general cargoes.
Imports: Cardboard, iron, textiles, chemical products, petroleum and derivatives.
Exports: Bananas, fruit, vegetables, coffee, plants, textiles. Traffic figures: Approx 2,495 vessels, 9,921,000t of cargo, 843,000TEU and 199,000 passengers handled annually.
Load line zone: Tropical.
Max size: Puerto Limon: LOA 300m, beam 40m, draught 10.0m, 30,000DWT. Puerto Moin: Tankers up to LOA 213m, draught 11.0m HW, 55,000DWT. Multipurpose Quay: Draught 11.5m.
