Location: Thursday Island is situated in the centre of a group of islands lying 15nm W of Cape York. General overview: Thursday Island is essentially a transhipment port for the supply of cargo to the smaller ports in the Torres Strait and the Gulf of Carpentaria. Imports handled include petroleum products, propane gas in bulk and general cargo. Exports include shell, prawns and crayfish. Traffic figures: Approx 78,000t of cargo handled annually.
