General Description
Location: Point-a-Pitre is located at the end of a well sheltered roadstead on the island of Grande-Terre, one of a group of islands which form Guadeloupe. General overview: Guadeloupe is under French jurisdiction and a Caribbean cruise ship port of call. Whereas Basse-Terre is a banana growing region, Grande-Terre is a sugar producing territory. In addition to bulk sugar cargoes and bananas, the port handles minerals, grain, petroleum and general cargo. There is a container terminal at Pointe Jarry used by multipurpose/refrigerated container ships on regular service to Europe. Traffic figures: Approx 2,460 vessels, 3,300,000t of cargo, 154,500TEU and 819,250 passengers handled annually. Load line zone: North Atlantic Seasonal Tropical Area, Tropical Nov 1 to Jul 15, Summer Jul 16 to Oct 31. Max size: LOA 300m, draught 11.0m.
