Location: The port is situated on the E shore of the Strait of Canso, Cape Breton Island. General overview: The port is split between three complexes, Port Hawkesbury, Point Tupper, and Mulgrave (see separate entry). The port district has facilities for ULCC tankers, bulk carriers and general cargo vessels. Traffic figures: Approx 7,885,000t of cargo is handled annually. Load line zone: North Atlantic Winter Seasonal Zone II, Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31. Max size: Max draught vessels proceeding to the oil terminal is restricted to 25.9m due to shoal in approaches.
