General Description

Location: Lubeck is situated in the Baltic, approx 8nm SW of Travemunde, at the confluence of the rivers "Trave" and "Wakenitz", and lies at the seaward end of the Elbe-Lubeck Canal. General overview: Lubecker Hafen-Gesellschaft MbH (LHG) operates the Port of Lubeck’s public areas, and it is the largest Baltic port operator for Germany. The largest terminal in the Port of Lubeck is the Terminal Skandinavienkai, one of Europe’s largest ferry and roll-on/roll-off terminals. Handling up to 90 vessel visits per week, the terminal is linked to important European and Scandinavian industrial centers. In addition to cargo-handling, the terminal hosts about 350 thousand Baltic Sea passengers. The Port of Lubeck’s Terminal Skandinavienkai handles about 22 million tons of cargo per year. Covering an area of 650 thousand square meters, the terminal contains about 2 thousand meters of quay with alongside depth of 9.5 meters and nine roll-on/roll-off berths. The main cargoes handled at the terminal include containers, lorries, trailers, automobiles, railcars, and dangerous goods. The Terminal Konstinkai in the Port of Lubeck is a multi-functional terminal handling forest products and project cargoes. Serving ports in Finland, Russia, and the Baltic Sea area, it has regular shipments with the Port of St. Petersburg. In addition to heavy cargoes and containers, the terminal serves the transport of motor vehicles. Covering over 131 square meters, the terminal contains sheds of 23.5 thousand square meters and additional roof capacity of 7.3 thousand square meters. It contains over one thousand meters of quay and two roll-on/roll-off berths with alongside depth of over 9.5 meters. It handles 150 thousand tons per year. The Port of Lubeck’s Terminal Nordlandkai is its biggest terminal, serving regular traffic with Finland’s ports and moving cargoes that include paper, forest products, among many other goods. The multi-purpose terminal features state-of-the-art equipment for handling forest products and facilities designed to operate in all types of weather. The terminal handles an increasing volume of containerized cargo and automobile exports. Covering 440 thousand square meters, its quays exceed 1.5 thousand meters with alongside depth of 9.5 meters, and it has five roll-on/roll-off berths. Handling four million tons per year, its main cargoes include paper, containers, automobiles, trucks, trailers, and heavy goods. Terminal Schlutup in the Port of Lubeck boasts state-of-the-art facilities for supporting trade with Sweden’s forest product industry. The terminal has immense storage capacity, fitting its cargoes, and the latest in cargo-handling equipment. The terminal covers 260 thousand square meters, with 80.5 thousand square meters of sheds. Its quays total 230 meters in length with 8.5 meters alongside depth and two roll-on/roll-off berths. Handling 1.8 million tons per year, major cargoes include forest products like pulp and paper, containers, trailers, lorries, and mixed cargoes. The Port of Lubeck’s newest terminal, Terminal Seelandkai, handles containers and roll-on/roll-off cargoes, including 1.4 million tons of trailers, containers, and automobiles each year. Its area of 20 hectares includes an 18.5 hectare terminal with three roll-on/roll-off berths and alongside depth of 9 meters. The Port of Lubeck handles over 400 thousand tons of dangerous goods in its terminals each year, and the port maintains a highly-skilled staff to handle that cargo. All of its terminals are equipped with special equipment and facilities to prevent environmental damages from these dangerous cargoes. Traffic figures: Approx 6,230 vessels, 31,700,000t of cargo, 261,220TEU and 291,320 passengers handled annually. Load line zone: Summer Zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Seasonal Area for ships of 100m or less in length, Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31. Max size: LOA: 190 m, beam: 29 m, draught: 8.7 m. It is possible to handle larger vessels, by arrangement only. The largest vessel handled: "Sighansa", 65,000 DWT, bulk carrier.
