General Description
Location: Lamu Island is situated on the northern coast of Kenya, close to the Somali border. General overview: Lamu is a port with anchorages which has coasters as its principal traffic. An extensive tourist trade is being built up on the island thereby indicating future increases in port traffic. Exports include coconuts, copra, rope, mat bags and cattle. Load line zone: Tropical. Max size: LOA 100m, draught 5.5m (entrance channel).
One of the flagship infrastructure projects identified by the Government in Kenya Vision 2030 is the development of a new transport corridor linking a new and modern Port of Lamu with Garissa, Isiolo, Maralal, Lodwar and Lokichogio and branching at Isiolo to Moyale at the border with Ethiopia and proceeding to the border with Southern Sudan.
The corridor to comprise of
1. Standard gauge railway line
2. Road network
3. Oil pipeline ( Crude & product)
4. Oil refinery ( Isiolo/Lamu)
5. International Airports (Lamu, Isiolo and Lokichogio)
6. Port at Lamu (Manda Bay).
7. Resort cities (Lamu, Isiolo and Lake Turkana)
