General Description
Location: Kalmar is situated W of Oland Island on the Kalmarsund, in the Baltic Sea. General overview: A well sheltered port suitably equipped to handle most types of cargoes and medium sized vessels, including cruise ships for which there are two berths. The port is never closed due to ice. There may, however, be difficulties during Jan-Mar. All ships bound inwards and outwards obtain free icebreaker assistance both in the port and in the Kalmarsund area close to the port. Exports: Grain, piece goods, sawn timber, forestry products and various bulk cargoes. Imports: Fodders, fertilisers, petroleum, iron products and various other bulk products. Traffic figures: Approx 600 vessels and 1,200,000t of cargo handled annually. Load line zone: Summer Zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Zone for ships of 100m or less in length. Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31. Max size: Oil terminal: With entry from S, by day and with tug assistance, pilots can handle a vessel with a maximum LOA 185m, beam 22m, draught 7.3m and 30,000DWT. By night the figure is reduced to 10,000DWT and draught 7.3m. Main Basin: With entry from the S, by day and with tug assistance, pilots can handle a vessel with maximum LOA 155m, draught 7.3m and 14,000DWT. By night these figures are reduced to LOA 140m, draught 6.9m and 10,000DWT. Max draught 7.3m S entrance; 7.0m N entrance. Max Airdraught: 36m. Largest vessel handled: "Okturus" 30,000DWT, products carrier.
