General Description
Location: Chalkis is situated on Euboea Island on the E side of the Greek mainland and can be approached from the N or S.
General overview: The port has reception facilities for general as well as bulk cargoes. Ships may berth within the main port or anchor offshore. There are shipyards and private berths within Chalkis Outer Harbour area. The principal products handled by the port are cement, building materials and fertilisers. South Outer Harbour consists of a pier for the Interchem Chemicals factory through a channel with max. draft 5.49 m. and Avlis Shipyard with two floating docks. The pier facilities are for loading cement from a cement factory and discharging coal with max. draft 6.40 m. On the Eastern shore consists of the old quay, length 150 m., depth of 6.09 m. alongside and the new quay, length 430 m., depth 5.0 – 7.0 m. alongside.
Traffic figures: Approx 1,000 cargo ships visit the port annually.
