General Description
Location: Ayios Nikolaos is situated in eastern Crete.
General overview: The port is actually a harbour (about 200m in length) near the larger ports of Greece and Turkey and a favourite destination for cruise liners in the south-eastern Mediterranean available for docking throughout the year. The port consists of three piers and an inner harbour, which is restricted to local fishing vessels. Although the port is restricted to vessels of up to 20,000DWT, vessels up to 100,000DWT can anchor in the Bay of Mirabello. The port is exposed to N'ly winds, but has a natural breakwater in the islet of Ayioi Pantes. Exports include olive oil, vegetable oil, carobs and almonds. Imports include fuel, timber, cement, fruit, flour, sugar, potatoes and cheese.
