General Description
Location: Whyalla is located in Spencer Gulf, South Australia and connected by railway to Iron Knob. General overview: The port is operated by OneSteel and is divided into two harbours. The Inner Harbour is for the discharge of bulk raw materials used at the steelworks. It is also used for the discharging of breakbulk cargoes and the loading of steel products. Containers can also be handled by the bulk cargo discharging stockbridges. The second harbour is known as the Outer Harbour or Ore Jetty and is used for bulk loading of raw materials and the discharge of fuel oils. Imports: Coal, limestone, fuel, oil, general, dolomite and ferro silicon. Exports: Iron ore, salt, coke breeze, steel products, nut coke and sulphate of ammonia. Traffic figures: Approx annual imports, 1,400,000t, exports 1,450,000t. Load line zone: Summer. Max size: Inner Harbour: Max length of vessels to Inner Harbour 203m. Outer Harbour: Max length of vessels to ore jetty 255m. Max draught 12.5m, varying with tide. An UKC of 10% of max draught is required. Largest vessel handled: "Iron Shortland", 107,096DWT (Outer Harbour).
