Location: The Port of Wakkanai is located at the northern end of Hokkaido in Soya-wan. General overview: The Port of Wakkanai handles vehicles, oil, cement, and general cargoes. The port is protected by two breakwaters, but strong northerly to northwesterly winds can cause heavy seas and swells in the area. Load line zone: Summer zone for ships over 100m in length. (Summer Mar 1 to Nov 30) Winter Seasonal Area for ships of 100m or less in length. (Winter Dec 1 to Feb 28/29) Port Authority requires "Safety measures" to obtain permission from coast guard for more than 10m of Summer draft of the vessel. Pilot/tug boat: not compulsory
