General Description
Location: Skardon River port is situated about 100km N of Weipa. General overview: Skardon River was declared a port in February 2002, with PCQ as the Port Authority. The Skardon River project is owned by Minerals Corporation Limited (MCL) through its subsidiary Skardon River Kaolin. The current owners bought the mine from Australian Kaolin after it went into liquidation and have upgraded and commissioned the plant. The port facilities are located upstream on the Skardon River. The river is shallow in certain areas and PCQ is working with the mine owners to determine the most cost-effective solution to transport the product. The port comprises of a barge landing area, freight wharf, ramp, small boat jetty and moorings. The main cargo handled at Skardon River Port is Kaolin. Load line zone: South Pacific Seasonal Tropical Area, Tropical Apr 1 to Nov 30, Summer Dec 1 to Mar 31.
